Upon arrival we learned I was dilated to a 6. There were a few things I was not prepared for once we got settled in. I made the mistake of putting my hypnobirthing CD in a CD player instead of an Ipod or MP3 player with earbuds. This made it difficult to focus on it. Also the hospital room was FREEZING! Even with the nurse bringing me 3 heated blankets I was still cold. My teeth were chattering and I could not control my breathing. And last but not least I felt like I couldn’t move with the monitors strapped to me even though the nurse informed me that I could. Realizing I wasn’t staying in control like I needed to in order to go through with the 100% natural birth I had planned I opted to get an epidural. Looking back I realize that by the time I got the epidural the room temperature had been adjusted and me changing positions helped me to regain control.
I started pushing around 9:30pm and at 10:27pm my beautiful little Joshua was born. My husband Michael had the wonderful privilege of delivering him which was such a neat experience for our little family.
When I was getting ready to leave the hospital my CNM asked me if it had been worth it to take the HypnoBirthing classes since I ended up getting an epidural anyway and I told her absolutely! The classes helped me be so much more prepared to handle labor and also I believe they saved me from many unnecessary interventions that could have occurred. Many doctors feel that if your water has broken then you need to start labor immediately and then they put you on Pitocin which can create harder contractions than what your body does and as a result put unnecessary stress on the baby which can result in a c-section. Thank you HypnoBirthing!!!
